Balance Sheet & Net Worth

The Accounts tab (also called Balance Sheet) lists every account with its current balance, net of transfers. The Net Worth Summary dashboard card shows the whole picture:

  • Assets β€” what you own (bank accounts, cash, investments, receivables)
  • Liabilities β€” what you owe (credit cards, loans, payables)
  • Net Worth β€” assets minus liabilities

A transfer β€” money moved from one account to another, like paying off a credit card β€” moves value between assets and liabilities, or between two assets. It is never income or expense, because paying down debt doesn’t change your net worth or bottom line.

See Transfers for guidance on recording them.

Account types

The Balance in the Balance Sheet is the net of all accounts in the set. Account types include:

Type Use it for
Checking / Savings bank accounts, cash
Credit Card credit accounts with statement cycles
Loan debts such as car/mortgage loans
Investment stocks, bonds, crypto holdings
Other anything else you track

Foreign-currency accounts β€” the EACR

For accounts in a foreign currency, the balance sheet can use either the current exchange rate or the Effective Average Conversion Rate (EACR) β€” a calculation that weights historical exchange rates by how much of the account was held at each rate. The useEacr setting toggles this on the balance-sheet calculation for foreign-currency accounts; it’s documented in the repo at memory-bank/eacr.md.
